Born in Ginza and raised in Nihonbashi and Aoyama, Tokyo.
Until the age of 15, Masako Somogye Wheeler grew up in a 450 years old traditional Japanese cultured family in Tokyo and Kyoto. She attended the Yokohama American high school where she was influenced by the 70's pop culture. In the 1980s, she moved to New York with a sponsorship from Idemitsu oil company and studied at the New York University and the School of Visual Art, where she graduated with honors. She then worked for museums and galleries and met many people in the art-world. She has also studied and worked in Paris for some years where she originally built her photograph collections.
She resides in New York City, Tokyo, and Kyoto.
